These obser-

vations are entirely confined to geological and engineering

aspects and do not deal with or consider other project evaluation

matters such as land evaluations, water distribution and use,

highway and railroad relocations, etc.

Probably the most important factor in evaluating the geo-

logical conditions at the two alternate sites is the location of

the ancient steep channel of the South Platte River relative to

the location of the two axes. At Narrows the old channel is 10-

eated away from the proposed dam and because of this "bypass"

effect there is no way to control the deep underflow of the river.

Consequently, this amoLlnt of water is automatically lost to the

project. At the Weld County site the deep channel is present be-

neath the proposed dam and although considerable expense would be

involved, it is definitely possible to control the underflow to

an essentially complete cutoff.

,
"

A second significant factor revealed by this investigation

is that the estimated reservoir seepage at the lower weld County

site is much less than had been expected. This is undoubtedly

due to the blanketing effect of the upper flood plain sediments

lying between the reservoir and the highly pervious deep channel

I'

,',

r- ....".~. - '. .",. -.~\~' .', .'.. -If';" - "-_

-- .--- - -
---"-- -
