Pumping along the '~esterly and northerly edges of the Yumu
Mesa to intercept '~esterly and northerly outflm~s from
the mound amounted to about 150,000 acre-feet in 1969,
for drainage protection of lands in the Yuma Valley and
South Gila areas.

"

Only a small amount of ground'~ater is pumped for irrigation
purposes, mainly in the southern part of Yuma ~lesa. In recent
years (1969-1972), large amounts of groundwater have been pumped
to maintain good drainage conditions of lands irrigated by
Colorado River water. Host of these drainage '~ells are con-
structed in the coarse-gravel aquifer ranging in depth from
100 to 300 feet, with yields from 2,000 to 4,000 gpm.
