.

CHECKLIST OF FACTUAL DATA
RELATING TO OPERATING CRITERIA
AGREED TO BY TASK FORCE t.tEMBERS

Water Supply

Virgin Flow at Lee Ferry
The Colorado River drains parts of seven states (Arizona, California,

Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming) and also of Nexico.

The runoff is erratic and varies considerably throughout the year as

well as from year to year. The flow of the river has been measured

near its mouth at Yuma, Arizona, continuously since 1903. Some of

the principal tributaries have been measured "since 1895. Neasure-

ments of the flow of the Colorado River at Lees Ferry were started in

. J\IDe 1921. The Paria River at Lees Ferry has been measured since

October 1923. The flow at the Lee Ferry compact point is est !mated

to be the sum of the Colorado River at Lees Ferry and the Peria

River at Lees Ferry. Prior to the period of actual record at Lees

Ferry, the flow of the Colorado River was estimated by comparison

with records available on the principal tributaries. To the estimated

and recorded historic flows, there were added the estimates of past

annual depletions in the Upper Colorado River Basin to obtain an
estimate of annual virgin (or undepleted flow). Starting in 1962,

the estimate of Upper Basin depletions reflects also the water

impounded each year in the reservoirs of the Colorado River Storage

Project.

.

\
