I

f'~~~..,~~
, ", .~, ." j ,)

I

I

C~mponents of the agricultural water supply system which

r~ly on surface water as a supply source include both ditches

a~d reservoirs. In the 72.5 mile reach of the South Platte

Rfver from Kersey to Balzac, there exist 17 ditch and/or

r~servoir diversions. Specific features of the surface water

sy;stem will be inventoried and evaluated in detail in a

s~bsequent section of this report.

I

I

I

GROUND WATER

I

T~e South Platte River Valley encompasses the main-stem South

Plhtte aquifer as well as portions of alluvial ground water

baains underlying major tributaries. These alluvial aquifers

typically consist of an ancient stream channel eroded in the
1

beprock, partly filled in with unconsolidated sand, gravel,

anti clay.

I

I

I

Th~ lower aquifer systems which underlie alluvial deposits are

us~ally comprised of water bearing formations of low

permeability. Yields from wells penetrating the lower

aqhifers are smaller than those tapping the alluvial system.

Repharge of the lower aquifer OCCllrs through outcroppings where

th~ aquifer material is exposed on the land surface, or from

percolating water from overlying formations.

I

I

I

I

Water bearing characteristics of geologic formations in the South
Pl~tte River Valley are depicted in Table 2-1.

I

I

I

I

I

2-7

",.1... il

~. /

_ <-_,,'.....'.,..k__,iJ._=.',L

q

,
:\
