0031159 . . The hydrologic study of the Upper Colorado River basin with emphasis on chemical quality of the stream waters is nearing completion and preparation of a report has begun. A by-product paper titled "Basic data on cMmical'quality in the lower Duchesne Rtver drainage basin", by W. V. Irons,'C. H. Hembree. D. A. Phoenix, and G. L. Oakland, was released to open file. In the study of water losses from phreatophytes. a sixth plastic- membrane tank or lysimeter was constructed on the Buckeye project in the Gila Valley, Arizona. This completes the array of tanks to determine use of water by saltcedar. An illustrated brochure describing the project. with emphasis on methods of constructing the tanks..as pUblished jointly by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation. In connection with the Humboldt River project, studies of'water use by greasewood and by willow have been started near Winnemucca, Nevada. Two plastic- membrane tanks 36 feet square and 10 feet deep have been constructed for the studies of greaswood. also three tanks 10 feet square and 7 feet deep for willow. Transplanting of vegetation to the tanks will be done as ,early in 1960 as is practical. A report entitled "Phreatophyte research in western United States, October 195$ to March 1959" was published as Geological Survey Circular 413. Classification of lands and supervision of leases Water and Power. - Completed during the period were large-scale topographic surveys of four damsites in Colorado, two on the White River. one on the Eagle River. and one on tributary Homestake Creek near its mouth. Mineral Classificatiol1..~ - Geologic mapping of the thornburg oil and' gas field, Rio Blanco and Moffat Counties, Colorado has been started. A study of the geology of the northeast Rangely coal area, Rio Blanco County, Colorado was initiated during August. Oil and Gas LeasinR. - Reports were prepared for submission to the Bureau of Land Management concerning protective leasing of the Stockton Annex Naval Supply Depot. Rough and Ready Island near stockton, California; concerning possible drainage of oil and gas from civil and military project areas in the Sacramento District, California; and the total acreage of Public and Acquired Land Leases under the jurisdiction of the . Los Angeles Office of the Bureau of Land Management. The waterflood of the Wilmington Oil Field, California, reported in our last s ami-annual report is well underway with gratifying results. Injection facilities are about 50% complete at this time and there has been a marked decrease in the area subsidence which was one of the primary reasons for the huge flood. -9- .,0.:
