The CAWCD opened its own office with one
employee in June 1975. With its responsibilities growing, the board employed a
general manager in 1981, By May, 1991, the CAWCD employed about 398 people
full-time and expects to increase to approximately 480 employees by the time it has
total responsibility for operation and maintenance of the CAP.

\ '.-'
, .

'",' ,;
'j ,'_f'

~ ,~ (\:, -,. ,- ",,'!:

~ i ('
, '

The Central Arizona Project was authorized by the Colorado River Basin
Project Act of September 30,1968, and is the largest project in the 89 year history of
the Bureau of Reclamation.

Construction on the CAP was started in 1973, Completion of its main aqueduct
system is scheduled for 1992, and the New Waddell Dam will be in service in 1994.
Hooker Dam and Buttes Dam, still parts of the authorized project, are not currently
scheduled for construction.

When completed, and if the water is available, the CAP will be able to deliver
a maximum supply of about 1.9 million acre-feet* (maf) of Colorado River water per
year to cities, industries, farms and Indian reservations in three Arizona counties:
Maricopa, Pinal and Pima.
