Economic importance of recreation

Recreation, or tourisn, no~ has a significant econo~ic impact on the
study area. It accounts directly or :~directly for about 18 percent of
the area's employment according to a 1962 report by the University of
Utah e:ltitled "An Economic Study of the Proposed Ca::;,yonlands National
Park aIld Related Recreation Resources. "

Touri~m is a basic industrf that is virtually ceytain to expand in
the area. The establishment and developmer:t of Lake Fowell and Canyon-
lands National Park, the completion of scheduled hi~~ways and roads in
the area, a:,d planned i~provements at other recreation siteS in the sur-
rounding area ~no~~ as the Golden Circle will increase tourists' visits
considerably. Today many of the recreation sites C~~ be reached only by
circuitous and costly trips which tend to keep tourists away.
