picturp hf'fore. ~tJrneday I'm going' to CAtch one of
tho!<e. Then fhe least t(-'fIlS and pipin~ plovers that
ha\-e I-wen mentioned-they're f'ndangered. Terns Iltf'
f'ndangered, plovers An;' lhreatf'ned. That falls under
the fish and wildlife function and is called endllllg'ered
species and we have an ()hli~alion to try to prott-ct
these. There has I}{'en 4uite a bit of to do lately, and
maybe "n' are responsible for having made too much
noise ahout it. nUl the impacts of the"e birds on other
functions has been on'rstate-d. It's creatt'd more con-
ce-rn than it should ha\'f' within the basin as far as I'm
concerne-d. We have, and this is through .John Ve]eh.
radsky's office. prepared a biological assessment that
has h€'en submitted 10 the Fish and Wildlife :-'t't\'ice.
The Fish and Wildlife Ser..ice has ashd ...ome more
questions and they would like some mort' dat.a so we
are continuing to pursut' thaI with them. Here's a pic-
ture of the piping plover. That's a much prettiN bird
than a least tt'ro. Tht'Y npst on barren sandbars and
they effect our operation hy restricting tht' amount
that Wf' can raise th€' wat€'r once they\'e nested. So
wp have to makE' plans in anticipation of their nesting
to prevent them from nesting too ]0'.'" on the s.l:Indbars.
We learned somt' things last summt'r and Wt' wil] do

some things differf'ntly next Yl-"'ar thun WI-"' did last Yt'ar.
We are still in II le-Hming cut\'e on that ont'o

In summary. we've talked about our public meetings
that l)('l'ut twice a year. The next is scht-duled for the
7th of April ht'te in Omaha_ We na\'(> a high l10nd risk
pt>riod that begins in .\larch and extends on into .July.
Snnw nwlt from the plains D<:ClIti' t'l)rl~'. Thf' mountain
"now melt ii' mueh ]atN and this IS what ,ci\'es us the
really big chunk of runoff undt'r norma] conditions.
Thl:' navigation season is eight months long, We in-
crease rt']f>8SeS in late .\larch In order to support na\'.
ig-ation from tht' tirst of April fO the first of Decemhf't.
(fwe have excess watN we t'\-acuate part of that during
the tt'n day extension to the navig-ation st'ason. En-
dang-erNI species j!:t'nerally start nesting- about mid.
.\18Y and continue their nesling- tx-fort' they can l1edge
g-enerally around Ihe middle of Au~st. We do certain
fish opt'rmioni' which ( didn'l elude to at all. but we
do certain Ihin,cs for fisheries, Chet will mention that.
That heg-ins sometimes around the first of Apri] and
t'nds for the .....alleyes Ilnd game fish in .Junp. hut there
i.. a spawn that continues on that has a ]esst't impact
on us throughout much of tht' summer perit>d.
