River Basin Population Estimates and Projections

River basin population estimates and projections were developed
by allocating each county's population estimate or projection
into the appropriate river basino The equation used to allocate
the county population into the appropriate river basin was:

y = a x b, where

(4 )

y = the estimated population for the portion of a specified
county that lies within this river basin,

a = the estimated population for the specified county and

b = the proportion of the specified county's 1980 population that
resides in this river basino

Ths county population estimates and projections were determined
as described earliero To determine the proportion of a county's
population that resides in a specific basin, the Kansas Water
Office allocated the 1980 UoSo Census population figures for each
city or town into the appropriate basin and assumed that each
county's rural population was approximately homogeneously
d i str ibu ted throughout the county 0 Hence each county's rural
population was allocated into the appropriate river basin, based
on the percent of the county's area that fell within the basin.
It was further assumed that the proportion of each county's
population in a specific river basin in 1980. would remain
approximately the same throughout the planning period.

Selected Results and Computations:

Table 9 shows population estimates and projections by river
basino An example of the computations involved, using equation
(4). is shown below for COffey Count Yo

In 1980, Coffey County's population was distributed as follows:
2406 percent in the Marais des Cygnes River Basin and 75.4
percent in the Neosho River Basino Hence in the year 2000.
Coffey County's projected population of 10.300 was allocated by
river basin as follows:

Coffey County population in the Marais des Cygnes River Basin =
a x b = (10,300) x (0246) ~ 2,500

Coffey County population in the Neosho River Basin = a x b

= (10.300) x (0754) ~ 7.800

34
