17

000794

This model had previously been used to estimate recharge, in much
of eastern and central Kansas by the UoSo Geological Survey's
Central Midwest Regional Aquifer System Analysis project (Dugan
and Peckenpaugh, 1985)0 The model was used to estimate recharge
in western and the remaining part of central Kansas after the
appropriate data were collectedo These results were combined
with those from the Central Midwest Regional Aquifer System
Analysis project (JoTo Dugan, written communication, 1985) to
make a generalized map of mean annual recharge in Kansaso
Average recharge for an area was estimated to the nearest quarter
incho

Selected Results and Computations:

Table 3 shows groundwater recharge by county and aquifero The
values in Table 3 were computed by using equation (2) as shown
below for Shawnee County. Note that several computations are
required because portions of Shawnee County have different
amounts of annual recharge 0

Groundwater Recharge = (a x b)/12, where

a = area of recharge (acres) and

b - average recharge (inches),

( 1) Alluvial groundwater recharge = (69,950) x (500)/12 = 29,146

2) Alluvial groundwater recharge = (1,924) x (5025)/12 = 842

3) Alluvial groundwater recharge = (9,652) x (505)/12 = 4,424

( 4) Total alluvial groundwater recharge = 29,146 + 842 + 4,424 =
34,412 ~ 34,000

5) Glacial groundwater recharge = (8,505) x (4075)/12 = 3,367

6) Glacial groundwater recharge = (6,152) x (500)/12 = 2,563

7) Glacial groundwater recharge = (12,698) x (5025)/12 = 5,555

( 8) Glacial groundwater recharge = (7,079) x (505)/12 = 3,245

( 9) Total glacial groundwater recharge = 3,367 + 2,563 + 5,555 +
.
3,245 = 14,730 = 15,000

.
(10) Total Shawnee County groundwater recharge 34,000 + 15,000
= 49,000 acre-feeto
