lD41

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this investigation of the Oxford Farmers Ditch Company
system is to:

1. Determine how the irrigators use their wells in
conjunction with surface diversions;

2. Determine through computation of a water budget and
other means the effect of historic irrigation
practice; including the use of wells, on the ground
water reservoir and the Arkansas River;

3. Prepare a plan of augmentation which would bring the
wells under the priority system, thus, legalizing
their use; and

4. Make recommendations for max1m1z1ng the beneficial
use of the water and related land resources.

This
elusions drawn
1969 and 1970.
and refinements

is a preliminary progress
from historic records and
The contents are subject
in analyses are made.

report which includes analyses and con-
data collected during the years 1968,
to revision as more data are collected

1968, 1969 and 1970 were relatively good years for the irrigators in
the Arkansas Valley. Although rainfall in 1968 was much below normal, the river
held up well and water was available when it was needed. Crop production was
good during the year. The tomato crop was the best of many years. Water was
abundant during the 1969 irrigation season, and all crops did well except sugar
beets. Heavy snow in October made it impossible to harvest them at the optimum
time. Subsequent warm weather started the beets growing new tops which lowered
the sugar content to a level the sugar company considered unacceptable. The out-
standing feature of 1970 was that the Arkansas"River had a good flow all year,
and most ditches had an adequate water supply.

. ,
