105:1

WATER BUDGET COMPUTATIONS FOR IRRIGATION SEASONS 1968 TO 1970

Calculation of a water budget consists of determining the difference
between the amount of water entering an area (inflow) and the amount of water
leaving an area (outflow) during a period of time. The difference between
these two quantities is the change in water storage during the period.

Inflow to the Oxford Farmers system can come from three sources:
headgate diversions, precipitation and seepage from the Arkansas River. Seep-
age from Chicosa Creek and the Apishapa River and ground water that moves into
the system from outside areas were considered negligible. Ground water used
for irrigation is not included in the inflow because it originates within and

SP

CUp

NEV

ARKANSAS

RIVER

Akcd

RF

oxd

~
f%
e-
:
C)
lJ
J

Q:-
lU
:..
1i=

OXd-OXs

CUe

~
~
1j
C(
"I'"

Grd

FARMERS

DITCH

O'l.s

. ).

~ Calcula.ted fenl1

Sketch 1 - Oxford Farmers Ditch Company System

not outside of the system. Outflow can occur in two forms: evapotranspiration
or consumptive use of all vegetation and seepage and springs which take water
from the ground water reservoir and give it to the Arkansas River. The dif-
ference between inflow and outflow is the change in ground water storage during
the period. If the inflow is greater than the outflow there is a gain in ground
water storage or recharge of the aquifer.

The water budget in equation form is as follows (see Sketch 1):

- 14 -
