.

.

- 4 -

A trip was made down the South Platte River with the water com-
/.t~tlr'I"1
missioner who pointed out some of the conditions lie had been ~g about.
The first stop was made at the bridge crossing the river at Henderson. Here
the stream gag1ng station had to be moved 600 feet upstream f1'om where a lIell
was installed about 60 feet fI'Oll\ the river. This well is owned by the Davis
Estate, and every time the pump was started !lIld' stopped, the water in the
stilling well at the river gaging station would shaw a drop or rise of the

water level on the chart, proving that the pumped water was cmn1ng from the

river. During the drouth of the last Ileveral years, the water in the river,

wen churned up, would show the detergent suds from the IleIIver sewerage. This

froth has also been seen in the discharge from this pumped water. (Pump was

not runrd.ng iihen rtsited.)

The next stop was made to the south on the lIest bank of the river at

the headgate of the Brantner Ditch, the oldest ditch on the river. Seventy-

five feet west of the headgate, Mr. McIntosh utilizes what IIIllY have been an old

gravel pit as a pump sump. (The pump was not running, but several feet of water

was standing in the hole probably at river level.)

The Meadow IslaDi am Side Hill.headgate is located on the west bank

of the river between the outlet ditch for the Colorado Big Thompson water and
~ ,
the headwork!! of the Evans #2 ditch which contracts for B1.g TOID'water. Near
the Meadow Island and Side Hill headgate, Mr. Muretta OWS' a well about 50 feet
from the river. The pump has a 15 H. P. electric motor and delivers about lDOO
gal. per minute. The plllllp was DOt 1'IUIIIing, but water could be seen in the lIell
at river level. It is possible when the Colorado-B1.g Thompson is sending water
