N Another cost-effective strategy under investigation to
~
00 further reduce salinity loading is to use ground water
Ci>
barriers in selected areas of the wash to develop a ground

water detention basin system. A verification of the strategy

is being proposed for the Whitney area.

Water Quality Improvement Program Units
(Reclamation-Department of Agriculture)

With the passage of P.L. 98-569, signed on October 30,

1984, Reclamation's planning activities under P.L. 93-320 for

the McElmo Creek Unit were concluded. Advance planning and

construction of the salinity control features will now be

incorporated under the Dolores Project. The SCS report on

McElmo Creek Unit, published in 1983, shows the activities of

both Reclamation and SCS have been coordinated and are

compatible.

The Uncompahgre project portion (Stage I) of the

Lower Gunnison Basin Reclamation plan was authorized for

construction by P.L. 98-569.

Advance planning studies

continued, and SCS plans to revise its implementation plan to

include priority areas and implementation phases.

In the Uinta Basin, coordination between Reclamation and

the SCS has been maintained. USDA continues to focus upon

onfarm improvements but has strengthened coordination in

planning canal and lateral group projects as part of the

. .

Central Utah project and Reclamation's salinity project. The

preferred Reclamation plan, completed in FY 1985, consists of

lining 55 miles of canals and laterals. The Regional

-10-
