.

';-.r"..' ........
<::,\);:.0

HYdrology

Wi th the purchase of land that would be inundated by the
reservoir, the area served by the Weldon Valley Canal vould be
taken out of production. In the water supply analysis, it has been
assumed that the Weldon Valley Canal water rights would be purchased
with the la'ld and the project would thus acquire the right to 165.00
second-feet having an October 26, 188l priority.

The pri1nary w"l3.ter supply for the unit would be derived from
the storage of flood flows and winter flows which are presently not
being diverted. A storage filing for the Narrows Reservoir has been
made by the Lower South Platte Water Conservancy District, but it has
not been adjudicated. Studies indicate that about 188,000 acre-feet
per year are potentially available to the unit from surplus flows.

The plan of development presented herein would require the
transfer of point of diversion and storage right for the present
Jackson Lake into the Narrows Reservoir. If the site of Jackson Lake
is developed for fish, wildlife, and recreation functions, a new
right to divert and store water in Jackson Lake for these purposes
would be required.

.

WATER REQUIREMENTS

Water requirements were computed for 23 of 33 ditches in the
Lower South Platte Water Conservancy Dist.rict. The 23 ditches serve
98.4 percent of the irrigable land in the district. In order to
simpli~J the water requirement analysis, the conservancy district
was divided into subbasins Band C. Subbasin B comprises 27,540
acres of irrigable land under three canals which divert upstream
from the vicinity of Fort Morgan. Subbasin C includes all other
ditches and the remaining 138,830 acres of irrigable land in the
district. Subbasin B has a farm headgate l~quirement of 2.34 acre-
feet per acre; subbasin C has a farm headgate requirement of 2.12
acre-feet per acre. TIle water requirements for 10 small ditches
were not computed nor included in the operation study, because the
analysis indicated that sufficient water is pumped under these
di tches to provide a full supply for the irrigable lands. This
conclusion, however, need not necessarily preclude the sale of unit
water to these 10 ditches. In evaluating water requirement, the
classified acreage was reduced by about 6 percent to allow for non-
productive land in farm roads, .ditches, etc. The acreage figures
presented in the following hydrology analysis are the productive acres

.

63
