Class 2 <br />lands have a composite productivity potential that is significantly <br />lower than that of the class 1 lands. To achieve maximum efficiency <br />in water utilization or to provide adequate farm drainage, <br />development work with costs ranging from nominal sums to $70 per <br />acre will be required. <br /> <br />Of the total class 2 lands, 39,840 acres are smooth and nearly <br />level. These lands are free of topographic limitations, but because <br />of coarse-textured, moderately shallow, or saline soils, production <br />on 96 percent of these lands will be only moderately high. For the <br />remaining 4 percent of the class 2 lands with nearly ideal topography, <br />the subsurface drainage is inadequate, and drainage works, estimated <br />to require moderate costs, are recommended. In case the drainage <br />works are not installed, production on these lands will also be only <br />moderately high. <br /> <br />Class 2 lands with correctable topographic limitations total <br />24,735 acres. These lands slope less than 3 percent but are <br />undulating. The soils are deep and medium textured except for minor <br />areas of sandy loam. Grading these lands to eliminate the undulations <br />is recommended. This development work, which would facilitate <br />spreading the water, could be accomplished at moderate costs. <br />Production from these lands, although high, will be slightly below <br />that of the class 1 lands, <br /> <br />Class 2 lands totaling 2,820 acres have topographic limitations <br />that are not corre~table, These lands lie on slopes ranging from <br />3 to 6 percent. Their soils are mainly medium textured and moderately <br />deep. In irrigating these lands, care should be exercised to keep <br />soil erosion at a minimum. Development work to be accomplished is <br />minor and can be accomplished at low cost. Production is anticipated <br />to be moderately high. <br /> <br />Class 3 <br /> <br />Lands totaling 34,820 acres, or 21 percent of the irrigable <br />area, were assigned to class 3, These lands have limitations similar <br />to those of the class 2 lands, but the severity of the limitations is <br />greater. <br /> <br />Of the class 3 lands, 15,905 acres are smooth and nearly level, <br />About 84 percent of these lands have deep soils that are medium and <br />fine textured, They are potentially capable of moderately high <br />production, but in order to reach their full potential, farm drainage <br /> <br />55 <br />
