Location of the Project <br /> <br />The Fryingpan-Arkansas Project hereinafter referred to as "Project" <br />extends from the upper reaches of the Fryingpan River on the western <br />slope of central Colorado eastward to the upper Arkansas River Basin <br />near Leadville, Colorado. From Leadville, the Project continues <br />in a southerly direction along the Arkansas Valley to Salida, then <br />generally eastward to the plains of southeastern Colorado. <br /> <br />A major portion of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project features including <br />Ruedi Dam, the North and South Side Collection Systems, Sugar Loaf <br />Dam, Twin Lakes Dam, Clear Creek Dam, and the canals, powerplants, <br />and appurtenant structures are located on the upper reaches of the <br />Fryingpan and Arkansas River and their tributaries in central <br />Colorado. A transmission line will extend from the north shore of <br />Twin Lakes to Public Service Company's Malta Substation, 4 miles <br />south of Leadville. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Fountain Valley Conduit will carry project water diverted from <br />the Arkansas River near Canon City to the vicinity of Colorado <br />Springs. Pueblo Dam, the terminal storage feature of the project, <br />is located 4 miles west of the city of Pueblo. The Arkansas Valley <br />Conduit will run easterly from Pueblo Dam, serving various valley <br />communities, to i~ terminus near Lamar. <br /> <br />R <br /> <br />Plll"P(\~P of the. Pro;ect <br /> <br />The objectives of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project include (1) develop- <br />ing the regional and national economy through irrigation of arid <br />lands of the West, (2) developing power and energy surplus to project <br />needs, (3) supplying domestic, municipal, and industrial water, (4) <br />providing flood control, (5) providing for the preservation, propaga- <br />tion, and enhancement of fish and wildlife, (6) providing for water <br />quality control, and (7) developing recreation facilities. In <br />addition, the Project is committed to conserve the scenery, the <br />natural, historic, and archeologic objects. <br /> <br />The Fryingpan-Arkansas Project encompasses basic objectives of the <br />Federal Reclamation Program. <br /> <br />The Reclamation Project Act of 1939, following the Depression and <br />Dust Bowl Era of the 1930's, provided goals for Reclamation such as <br />contracting for the storage, delivery, or sale of municipal and <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />II-I <br />
