However, it would be possible to survey the <br />intake channel with hydroacoustic gear prior to the formation of <br />surface ice and possibly through the ice if conditions were ideal. <br />This information would provide insight regarding the presence, <br />densities, and possible vulnerability of kokanee to winter <br />entrainment. This data could be easily and cheaply collected using <br />hydroacoustics. We recommend this monitoring be conducted over the <br />next 5 years, or more specifically, during lower reservoir elevations. <br /> <br />Lastly, our surveys near the dam suggests that facility lights are <br />attracting fish toward the structure. We suggest Reclamation <br />investigate whether the lights near the intake tower and spillway can <br />be either turned off or dimmed. While this did not seem to be a <br />problem in 1995-1996, it might prove beneficial in reducing <br />entrainment at night when the reservoir spills, or during operation at <br />a lower elevation. <br /> <br />33 <br />
