GPS coordinates of transect way points and
distances are provided in Appendix A. Fish distribution was also
examined inside the reservoir'S major arms (Soap, Lake Fork, West Elk,
Cebolla). Transects were to be sampled twice each field trip,
unfortunately, equipment failure and inclement weather prevented the
completion of all duplicate surveys.

Day and night surveys were conducted in front of the powerplant intake
in August 1995 and July 8 and 9, 1996. The area immediately in front of
the tower was generally surveyed in 1995, and a more detailed 11
transect grid was surveyed in 1996.

Table 3. In June 1994, the majority of fish were found
in the lower and deeper portions of the reservoir. The lowest fish
densities for June were detected in the Iola Basin where they were
approximately half the levels measured in the eebo1la and Sapinero
Basins (Table 4). This trend reversed in August and October with Iola
Basin having the highest fish densities (Figures 9, 10, and 11). This
was undoubtedly influenced by the release of kokanee via the Gunnison
River, but also by smaller fish preferring the more productive inflow
area. Fish distribution in August 1995, was slightly different from
the previous year. Reservoir fish densities were the lowest in Iola
Basin and gradually increased as one moved downstream and approached
the Dam (Figure 12).

17
