ARMY ENGINEER DISTRICT, KANSAS CITY <br />CORPS OF ENGINEERS <br />1800 Federal Office Building <br />Kansas City 6, Missouri <br /> <br />SYLLABUS <br /> <br />This report on the desirability of further works for flood <br />control, bank stabilization, and other purposes in the basin of <br />the Republican River is in response to a resolution of the Com- <br />mittee on Public I,orks of the United States Senate. The Republican <br />River rises in eastern Colorado and flows through southern Nebraska <br />and north-central Kansas to its junction with the Smoky Hill River <br />to form the Kansas River. The basin is nearly 400 miles long and <br />covers almost 25,000 square miles. Most of the flood problems have <br />been resolved, reduced, or will be resolved by existing and author- <br />ized projects. The outstanding problem, with which this report is <br />primarily concerned, is the loss of main stem channel capacity. <br />This has resulted from abnormal willow growth within the river chan- <br />nel during the drought period of the 1950's. The report recommends <br />the removal of the willows and the maintenance of an open channel <br />comparable to that which existed formerly. The project would have <br />a first cost of $1,495,000 of which all but $32,000 would be Federal. <br />The suhsequent annual maintenance cost of $29,090 would be borne <br />locally. The project would have a benefit to cost ratio of 2.2 to 1. <br />
