0022116

.

.

i. Flood of September 1958. Intense rainfall occurred in the
lower Republican River basin in early September 1958. In the Elk
Creek basin, above Clyde, Kansas, the storm had a center of 14 inches
of rainfall and averaged about 10 inches. The flood crestpd at 3
a.m. on 6 September 1958 in Clyde, about 4 feet higher than the
previous maximum flood recorded in May 1950. The estimated urban
damage was $950,000 while rural damage in the Elk Creek and adjoin-
ing valleys and along the lower Republican River amounted to
$850,000 more.

1. Flood of June 1960. Intense rainfall over the upper Beaver
Creek basin produced the highest flood stage of record at Cedar
Bluffs, Kansas, on 11 June 1960, and caused severe damage to agri-
culture and transportation in.that vicinity. Minor overflows
occurred at about the same time along the neighboring Sappa Creek.
The total damage approached $1 million.

~. Floods of 1961. During May and June 1961, there was minor
flooding along Beaver, Sappa and Prairie Dog Creeks; and, in Sep-
tember, storms over the lower Republican River basin caused relatively
heavy damage along Buffalo Creek and downstream along the Republican
River, totaling about $350,000.

1. Hypothetical floods. Standard project floods were not
computed for the reaches below the reservoirs because such data
would not be pertinent to the improvements under consideration.

8. DAMAGES PREVENTED

Since the publication of the report under review, seven reser-
voirs having flood control storage capacity have been placed in
operation in the Republican River basin. These have been credited
with the prevention of flood damage to the extent of $10.5 million,
as shown in table 3. In addition, local protection works at
Indianola and at Bartley, Nebraska, have prevented flood damages
estimated at $23,000 and $19,000, since completion of these projects
in July 1949 and March 1952, respectively.

11
