SECTION II - DESCRIPTION

.

4. PHYSICAL FEATURES

a. Geo~raphy. The Republican River rises in northeastern
Colorado and flows northeast, east, and southeast through Colorado,
Nebraska, and Kansas to its junction with the Smoky Hill River, where
the confluence forms the Kansas River at Junction City, Kansas.
See the appended reference Map and the more detailed maps in
Appendix I: Maps and Charts. The baain is nearly 400 miles long
from west to east, and it has a total area of 24,955 square miles.
The western portion is a fan-shaped area, up to 120 miles wide, which
makes up about four-fifths of the basin area. The eastern portion
is a relatively.narrow corridor, 160 miles long and 20 to 30 miles
wide. The Republican River proper is formed by the confluence of
the North Fork Republican River and the Arikaree River. The major
tributaries in downstream order are the South Fork, Frenchman Creek,
Red Willow Creek, Medicine Creek, Sappa Creek and its tributary
Beaver Creek, and Prairie Dog Creek, all of which are upstream from
the Harlan County Dam and Reservoir. In the eastern portion, below
the Harlan County Dam, the largest tributaries are White Rock Creek
and Buffalo Creek. The tributaries and their drainage areas are
shown in table 2. The gross drainage area includes areas in the
sandhi11s of the upper basin, estimated by the Bureau of Reclama-
tion at about 7,170 square miles, which lack developed drainage
and, except for ground water flows, do not contribute to the stream-
flow of the river.

.

4
