<br />, 0 0 0 0 3 1_ <br /> <br />IlNESTIGATIONS BUREAU OF RECLM'lATION <br /> <br />Fiscal Year 1948 <br /> <br />BLUE RIVER - SOUTH PLATI'E BASIN(l) <br /> <br />Program $87.000: This investiGation involves an engineering, <br />econonic, and acriclutural report on the diversion of surplus waters <br />frOB the Blue P.lver, a tributaI"J of the Colorado River on the llest- <br />ern slope of the Rocky Mountains, to the South Platte River, a trib- <br />utary of the Missouri River on the eastern slope. Investigations <br />have been carried on for several years. <br /> <br />Preaent plans involve construction of da~s, reservoirs and <br />gatherinG canals on the western slope, a long tunnel through the <br />Rocky Jlountain Divide, several reservoirs and powerplants on the <br />eastern slope and distribution canals in the South Platte Basin. <br /> <br />Olle report Has prepared about 1940 but was never approved for <br />submission to Congress. Investigations have continued as fu.~ds <br />have been ullocated from year to year. Allnost all of the field lmrk <br />had been coupleted "rioI' to the beginning of fiscal ,rear 191,G. <br /> <br />During the year practic::!lly all efforts uere directed toward <br />the preparation of an J.nterir.1 report l1hkh l~as schedl.ued for .com- <br />pletion Ju.ly 1, 1948. As a basis for the report,a series of fifteen <br />appendixes coverinG all phascs of tlce project heve been in prepara- <br />tion, revieu, and final publication. <br /> <br />On J.la:' 1 it Has eatLClated that the report was 97 percent <br />complete. The only fillld work reported as beinr; in proGress during <br />this year was a drillinG program for the Reudi dansite. <br /> <br />In l,ja:' of 1948 a co!'m ttee was appointeG to 110rk out plans for <br />a proposed conpromise with the City and County of Denver involving <br />adjudication of water riGhts on the Blue River. <br /> <br />,. <br /> <br />Before any report can be finally submitted to Congress on the <br />project it will be necessarJ for the State of Colorado to determine <br />uhat uater they cO:lsider surplus on the woatern slope and which would <br />become availablo for div~rsion out of their share of the water to <br />be allocated under the tenns of the Colorado River Compact. An <br />interstate cOrl."lission is now \.lo,:,](1ng on the probler.1 of allocating <br />Colorado River uaters to the '!arious upper states of the Basin <br />but no aGreement has been reached. Costs to June 30 were estir.lated <br />to be ~)65,OOO. <br /> <br />55 <br />
