Data from the
initial test in 1990-91, has proven the project to
be very effective, resulting in reductions of deep
percolation of 51 percent and overall water use
of 26 percent. A savings of labor was also
realized. For those of you not familiar with the
program, surge irrigation involves a valve
operated by a motorized controller which
switches the irrigation water from one portion of
the field to the other at prescribed times. By
applying the water in alternating "surges," the
irrigation set time and corresponding deep
percolation can be reduced when compared to
the results obtained by the best conventional
irrigation management practices. Participants
have agreed to cooperate with Department of
Agriculture personnel on monitoring activities on
their fields. Participation in this year's program
is full, with approximately 40 water users having

-enrolled. ~lli~/~\, '<"__p_
f..;"v-~II1! _ c......~~ .--______ "'__"'""-.-
.
