<br />1,1 <br />I <br /> <br />0(1739 <br /> <br />HATERJHED WORK PLAN <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />LIMON WATERSHED <br /> <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />Elbert and Lincoln Counties, Colorado <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Jeptember 1962 <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF PLAN <br /> <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />General <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The proposed watershed protection and flood prevention project <br />for the Limon Watershed is sponsored by the High Plains Soil Con- <br />servation District, the Town of Limon, Colorado, and the Colorado <br />State Soil Conservation Board. The 50il Conservation Service, U. S. <br />Department of Agriculture, and the Colorado Water Conservation <br />Board provided assistance in the detailed studies leading to the <br />preparation of the Hater shed Work Plan. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The area includes 15.42 square miles (9,870 acres), of which <br />8.19 square miles are in Elbert County and 7.23 square miles are in <br />Lincoln County, The main drainage is unnaw,ed and flows intermittently <br />in a southeasterly direction through the To>m of Limon joining Lake <br />Creek which is a tributary to Big Sandy Creek, The Big Sandy Creek <br />joins the Arkansas River some 127 miles southeast of Limon, Colorado. <br />Approximately 91.6 percent of the watershed area is rangeland, 1.4 <br />percent is irrigated and dry cropland, 4.8 percent is urban and 2.2 <br />percent is in miscellaneous use below the Rock Island Railroad. <br /> <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Floodwater and sedilnent damage occurs on the agricultural <br />rangeland and irrigated cropland in the floodplain above and below <br />the Town of Limon. Residential, commercial, and municipal properties <br />valued at ~3,500,OOO are located in the floodplain area of the Town <br />of Limon and are subject to floodwater and sediment damage. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />
