<br />Floodwater damage on agricultural land is minor compared to
<br />that on urban areas. There is crop and pasture, fence and clean-up
<br />damage as shown in Table 5,

<br />During the past 20 years (1940 - 1960) Highway 40-24-287 has
<br />been urbanized along Main street and the town has increased in
<br />population by about 42 percent, from 1,053 to 1,811 (Federal Census).
<br />More properties are now subject to damage in the overflow area than
<br />during any of the previous floods.

<br />The estimated value of properties in the overflow area vulnerable
<br />to floodwater damage is $3,500,000.
<br />
<br />Homes in the damage area range in value from $2,500 to $20,000.
<br />Their total estimated value is $1,000,000.

<br />Comnercial properties consist of motels, trailer parks,
<br />restaurants, supermarkets, service stations, bulk gasoline and oil
<br />plants, garages, a hotel, a grain elevator, and various other small
<br />businesses. The estimated value of individual businesses ranges
<br />from ~4,000 to $80,000. Their total estimated value is $1,000,000.

<br />The municipal and other public properties consist of a library,
<br />a swimming pool, parks, streets, bridges, water lines, sewer lines
<br />and lagoons, a stand-by electrical plant, churches, and school
<br />buildings. Their total estimated value is about $1,500,000.

<br />There are six school buildings located on the middle stream
<br />which includes the new $400,000 high school, Other buildings
<br />include: old high school, grade school, gymnasium, industrial
<br />art and music hall, Most of the to\;n students cross one or two
<br />of these streams in going to or returning from school, When floods
<br />occur, these students either remain at school or home until the
<br />floodwater recedes. The school is consolidated and the school
<br />buses cross these streams.

<br />To date, no loss of life has occurred from floods in the
<br />watershed, However, according to the local residents, there have
<br />been many "near losses" of life resulting in the opinion that they
<br />have been fortunate in this respect.
