June 11.2003

San Juan Irrigators Agree to Cut Use

The New Mexican I BEN NEARY

In an agreement that heads olTpossible state intervention. irrigators on
the San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico say they will reduce
their water use this summer by an estimated 3 percent.

The agreement caBs for release of at least 450 cubic-feet ofwalcr per
second from Navajo Dam through the summer months. While less than
ideal for fishing. that flow should maintain the trophy trout population
there. officials said.

John Whipple, San Juan River Basin program manager with the New
Mexico Interstate Stream Commission, said the agreement calls for water
users on the river to share in shortages this summer.

The U.s. Bureau of Reclamation predicts a shortage on the San Juan
River of about 3 percent this summer.

Under the agreement. the :'\'a\"ajo Irrigation Project will get .:!O-l,OOO acre-
feet of water this year. Whipple said. That amount could be reduced
depending on conditions. he said.

An acre-foot is about 325.000 gallons.

The :\avajo Irrigation Project diverted about 190.000 acre-feet last year.
Whipple said. Since then, he said the project has added another block of
irrigatcd land.

UU1621,

http://\,.ww.santafenc\\mexican.comimain.asp:Secl ion I 0=2&5 ubSectionlD= 7 &Artic Ie ID... 6/12/2003
