f-1kn~ Doarly Zoo, in Omaha, NB, presently has nine boreal toads, which were provided from
the Jumper Creek site in 1999, and have successfully gone through hibernation this past
winter, Ten additional toadlets from Mineral County will be sent to Henry Doorly Zoo in the
near future.

Three additional female toads were taken from the wild and placed in captivity at the Sybille
Wildlife Research Center (WY) this summer in order to augment the limited genetic diversity
of that stock. The captive boreal toads at Sybille are expected to be split between Sybille
and the Saratoga Nat. Fish Hatchery (pending USFWS approval), in order to reduce the risk
of an unforeseen disease outbreak, or other mishap, destroying all the remaining stock from
WY.

Ongoing Research

Mark Jones (CDOW) continues his research on boreal toad habitat use, life history, and
population dynamics in Clear Creek County, with emphasis re-directed towards the chytrid
fungus problem,
Mark is also working in cooperation with Dr. Allan Pessier to test treatment methods for
captive toads infected with chytrid fungus, Preliminary results with ,01 % treatments of
Sporanox (Itraconazole) have shown promising results,

Cindy Carey (CU/Boulder) is investigating the specifics of how chytrid fungus kills
amphibians, and why different species vary in their susceptibility to this pathogen, She will
also be looking at how temperature affects chytrid growth rates, and efficacy of antimicrobial
peptides,

CDOW-funded work continues at the University of Maine to develop a genetic probe (PCR
test) for chytrid fungus detection, Some delays and problems have been encountered in the
development of the test, but we still hope to have it available sometime this year,

Andy Holland (CSU/CDOW) continues his work on boreal toad breeding habitat evaluation
and modeling,
