.

~i-S-2 i

PREFACE

Sediment is defined as the fragmental material transported by. sus-
pended in, or deposited by water or air, or accumulated in beds by other
natural agents; it does not include organic material floating on the sur-
face or ice.

The control of erosion and sedimentation which adversely affects ell
water use and control developments is an acute and major problem in the
project area, principally on the Eastern Slope. The Gunnison-Arkansas
Project would, to a large extent, alleviate this problem. Although no
project structures are planned exclusively for sediment retention, poten-
tial reservoirs would be constructed with ade~uate storage to provide for
sediment control. As a result, downstream sedimentation would be
lessened, the life of existing downstream structures would be prolonged,
and maintenance costs for canals and laterals would be reduced.

~

. -- ---- -- - ---
_ _ n ______ __________ _u

..,
I=-----::

.
- --- -.-.

=- -'

.

.

iv
