The approximate total length of later~ls is there-
fore 300,000 divided by 160 or 1,875 miles. These laterals must be
cleanen once or twice a year to keep them operating. It has been
found that on an average the laterals fill up one-third each year
end that the average cross-section of sediment in laterals is 4.66
feet wine by .44 feet deep. Hence, the quantity of sediment depos-
ited in the lateral system of the irrigated land on the Eastern
Slope is approximately 4.66 x 0.44 x ~OO.OOO x ~.2g0 equals 466
160 x 43,560
c ,acre=f.se,t=.f\.v.~:r.age"~ll,,alcly.., _,' -, '-~-:_~ - -- -.
- - - - ~----- - ---- -- --

---- - -----
-- --------._---

~~::_-_'~'':'''C___, :: ~:.,-~-:_-~~-:,~~;-_.,c.:___ _c~:::;_~--=--_=_CMArS'-,::~-'-- ~'.2..:._' ~---'--

.----- - - - ------.
, ,

.

From studies made by the Fort Lyon CpnR1 Company supported by
data accumule, ted from the Soil Conservation Service ann the Bureau of
Reclamation, it is found that sediment ie depositen in the irrigation
canals, shown on exhibit 3, at an average rate of 0.01 cubic feet per
mile per second-foot. From table 4 of existing canals, length times
canal capacity equals 421,073 second-foot miles. Hence, 42l.07~ x ~2.g
43,560
equals 510 acre-feet average annual sedimentation of the canal system.

Existing can.us

;Source of water
.
. .: Arkansas River
.
