o

o
o
(-,
~~
00
C"il

Denver, Colorado
,
Narch ,I, 1942

The following statement supplements a report, dated December,
1 9J-I 1 , entitled, "Agrioultural Produotion in Northern Colorado Hater Con-
servanoy Di striot as Related to National Defense. II That report was
prepared for the pUrpose of showing the relation of the Colorado-Big
-Thompson projeot, now under oonstruotion, to the production of food in
the present emergenoy. Sinoe it was issued additional data and changed
o ondi ti ons with respect to the pI' oduotion of sugar to meet exi sting
national needs have beoome important. For that reason the accompanying
supplemental statement issubrid tted.

It should be notedl

1, . That with the aid of supplemental water provided by the
Colorado-Big Thompson projeot the harvested beet e.creage in the Northern
Colorado Hater Conservancy District could reach an average of approxi-
mately 19,.000 ac~es as oompared with the harvested beet aoreage in 1941
of approximately 104,000 aores.

2. That the present oapaoity of the thirteen sugar faotories,
now looated and operating in the area. is adequate to refine all beets
harvested from about 205.000 aores.

" That the potential average bee'!; produotion oape.oity of the
Northern Colorado Hater Conservancy Distriot and the present capa01ty
of refineries in the area are approximately equal. It followS that no
materials vitally needed in produotion of war equipment will be required
for processing purposes within the area.

.4. That farljl operators in the Northern ColoradO ,Water Con'"
servanoy Distriot are already equipped with farm tools and maohinery re-
quired for beet produotion. During the war eJ]);lrgency new farm maohin-
ery needed in the area will be largely limited to ordinary replaoements.

5. That the present program of beet seed production is ade-
quate to furnish all antioipated future demands.

6, That the increased produotion of sug~.r beets in the area
will result in proportionate inorease in the by-produots (beet tops.
pulp and molasses) whioh are utilized in sheep and oattle feeding. Pro-
duotion of fat livestock to meet war needs will thereby be aided.

7. That the sugar beet industry in Northern Colorado has
always used a olass of transient farm laborers. largely Spanish-Amerioan,
who follow the seasons Of orop produotion. Mostly unskilled in trades,
