C\! <.0 o C\l March 1973 SUMMARY SHEET YELLOW JACKET PROJECT, COLORADO LOCATION The Yellow Jacket Project is located in northwestern Colorado in the White and Yampa River Basins of the Upper Colorado River Basin. CURRENT STATUS The project was given priority in the completion of its planning report as a potential participating project in the April 11, 1956 Colorado River Storage Project Act (P.L. 485). The initial Proposed Regional Director's Report was comple ted in October 1968 and distributed for review'. This report included recommendations by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife that project reimbursable funds be spent to purchase 14,000 acres of privately owned lands for the mitigation of deer losses caused by project irrigation of privately owned lands. The Yellow Jacket Water Conservancy District raised objections to this recommendation. After numerous meetings with all interested parties the plan was rescoped to: eliminate project irrigation served to all lands not presently cultivated; provide greater fishery releases in the White River; provide mitigation costs of $500,000 as a portion of the project costs; and to provide additional water for municipal, domestic, and industrial use. Because the present project plan has been revised from the 1968 report, the report was again distributed for review in August 1972. The Draft Enviornmental Statement was also completed and distributed for review with the report. The Colorado Wildlife Commission has now gone on record as opposed to the project in any form or any similar project on the White River upstream from Meeker, Colorado. They further moved that if the project is con- structed that certain additional mitigation measures be included in the project, some of which were included in the revised plan. An attempt is underway again, through the evaluation of alternatives, to meet the requirements of all concerned parties. Funding Genral investigations Contributed funds Total $596,254 5,669 $601,923
