<br />FOR THE SANJUAN REGION

<br />SANJUAN REGIONAL OVERVIEW
<br />
<br />Colorado's Planning and Management Region 9 is comprised of the counties of
<br />San Juan, Dolores, Montezuma, La Plata and Archuleta. Located in the
<br />Southwest comer of the state, the Region is bordered on th north and east by
<br />the San Juan Mountains, on the South by high plateaus and me!as, and on the
<br />west by relatively flat sagebrush and semi-desert lands. S eral river
<br />valleys define the principal areas of lush agriculture and cation of urban
<br />centers, particularly the valleys of the San juan, Las Anim~ and Delores
<br />Rivers. l

<br />Elevations range from over 14,000 feet among the peaks of th San Juan
<br />Mountains to 4,900 feet near the point where the borders of he states of
<br />Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona intersect.
<br />
<br />The Region encompasses 6,570 square miles of predominately n tural woodlands
<br />and agricultural land uses. Agriculture, silviculture and t urism constitute
<br />the principal economic base with mining contributing a subst ntial amount as
<br />well. Land ownership characteristics are shown in Figure I.
<br />
<br />In 1980 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adopted re ional population
<br />projections for Colorado. These projections were later disa gregated to the
<br />county and service area level. The Water Quality Control Di ision is required
<br />to use the EPA projections for 208 planning and for Construe ion Grants
<br />program purpos<!s through the year 2000.

<br />The following projections reflect this requirement. Project ons for the year
<br />2005 were developed by the State Demographer, Division of Lo al Government,
<br />Department of Local Affairs.
