--------------

0581

TERRESTRIAL STUDIES

~lETHODOLOGY

Floral Observations
The floral investigations for the Homestake Project were
carried out at all site locations.

The methodology used to study the floral composition con-
sisted of standard ecological techniques as detailed in Methods
of Vegetation Study (Phillips, 1953).

The quantitative calculations and explanations used in
this study are given in Table A-2. Forb~ were counted by stem
but the grasses were counted by clump due to their vigorous
tillering habit.

Vegetational cover maps were constructed for each site to

show the generalized distributional patterns and densities of

the species observed for each site.

Wildlife Observations

Each site was extensively covered by foot to develop an

.
indication of those animal species that actively use the indi-
vidual sites.

Methods

At each proposed diversion dam site a series of 0.01 acre

plots were laid out to census big game pellet groups and assess

qualitatively the condition of the plant species utilized as

A-5
