OlJll12

e

.

e

Groundwater well sites used existing, abandoned, or otherwise available wells for surface
water injection.

Project sites 6 and 7 received water from Murtaugh Lake, a Twin Falls Canal Company off-
stream water reregulating facility for groundwater recharge. Snake River water was
diverted and conveyed to the lake. Murtaugh Lake water is pumped and conveyed several
miles through pressure pipeline to sites 6 and 7 for injection into wells to recharge the
groundwater. Surface water is available from the lake prior to the irrigation season, during
the irrigation season when canal capacity is not all being used to convey irrigation water,
and after the irrigation season.

Cottonwood and Dry Creeks are ephemeral streams, and during the irrigation season they
are fully appropriated. Water is usually available during the spring runoff to divert for
groundwater recharge. The creek flows are diverted to desilting basins and then to
injection wells.

Project Facilities

The project facilities consisted of:

Groundwater recharge

Injection wells 13
Infiltration pond 1
Stream gauges 2
Continuous recorder wells 9
Monthly wells 4
Semiannual wells 9
Surface water sites 4
Groundwater sites 10
Injectate sites 11
Groundwater sites 15
Pumping plants 2
Pressure pipe

Surface water monitoring

Groundwater level monitoring

Background water quality monitoring

Water quality monitoring

Murtaugh Lake pumping plants
Conveyance and distribution systems

The project used two types of connections between the delivery system and the well. At the
Cottonwood Creek sites, a delivery line was plumbed directly into the well casing with a
90-degree elbow. At other sites, a gooseneck pipe was used to connect the delivery line and
well casing.

It was determined that some wells needed a drop pipe extending a significant distance
down into the well. This prevented damage to uncased portions of the well and air

3
