Recent

snowfall in the mountains will not improve the runoff prospects

appreciably and those areas without carryover storage will be faced

with inadequate supplies unless spring and summer precipitation is

near or above normal.

Computation of streamflow records for the 1966 report for

Colorado is progressing on schedule and the report will be ready to

send to the printer about the middle of June.

Mass measurements of water levels in wells in the South Platte

and Arkansas River Valleys were made during the latter part of March

before substantial pumping began. Seepage runs were made on the

South Platte and Arkansas Rivers at about the same time.

Work continued on the San Luis Valley Project. Wells were installed

for two finite difference sites in the area. The sites will be used to

determine upward movement of water in the aquifer and evapotranspiration

losses. Ten observation wells were installed to monitor the ground-water

divide between the Cloud Basin and the Rio Grande.

A group of 25 persons from the Arkansas Valley attended a briefing

on the analog model capabilities and limitations on March 30 and 31.

The group consisted of Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District

Board members, newspapermen, ditch company officials, well owners and

state and federal officials.

The Bureau of Mines began deepening Core Hole No. 2 in the Piceance

Basin from about 2,100 feet to about 3,200 feet on May 4th. Coring of

the hole had stopped last fall when a pocket of gas exploded and caved in

about 50 feet of hole.

BBll

.
.
