000608

---------- APPENDIX C: FY-2002 - 2003 PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS --------

110. NNNOI04: Removal of Channel Catfish from the Lower Yampa River (FWS, $112,000)

This study builds on results of a previous project to develop an effective control program
for adult channel catfish in Yampa Canyon. The goal of channel catfish removal in
Yampa Canyon is to sufficiently reduce the abundance of adult channel catfish such that
predatory and competitive impacts on growth, recruitment, and survival of resident
humpback chub are minimized, Study objectives are to: I) reduce the abundance of adult
channel catfish in Yampa Canyon by capture and removal (lethal); and 2) determine fish
community responses to reductions in channel catfish population size, including channel
catfish reproduction and recruitment. Total out year cost: $121,800.

C-31 NNNOI02: Yampa Northern Pike Spawning Habitat Exclusion (CDOW, $50,000)

The goal of this project is to reduce spawning and reproduction by northern pike in
Yampa River habitats in order to reduce the abundance of pike in endangered fish critical
habitat downstream. The study will: I) determine feasibility and logistic requiremenls of
using temporary low-cost screening to prevent access to these habitats by spring
spawning, adult northern pike on a reach-wide scale from Craig to Steamboat Springs;
2) implement exclusionary screening of potential pike spawning habitats on a reach-wide
scale and mechanically remove pike from any habitats where access by pike to screened
spawning habitats has been gained due to temporary screen failure; 3) monitor
effectiveness of exclusionary screening using trend analysis of northern pike capture
rates; and 4) evaluate and recommend design improvements in existing irrigation
diversion and return systems to reduce pOlential northern pike spawning habitat or
facilitate screening control. Total out year cost: to be determined.

"

I:
\:

98a. NNA/9802: Translocation of Northern Pike from the Yampa River (LFL, $95,700)

The goal of this project is to improve survival of endangered fishes in the Yampa and
Green rivers by reducing the number of adult northern pike in critical habitat. Pike are
collected between Milk Creek (RM 120) and the entrance ofYampa Canyon (RM 46) in
the early spring as backwaters and tributaries fill during lhe ascending limb of the
hydro graph when the pike typically congregate in off-channel habilats for spawning,
feeding, or resling. The pike are then translocated to isolated ponds or reservoirs in or
near to the Yampa Valley that conform to Nonnative Fish Stocking Procedures and are
accessible to anglers. This project also will determine effectiveness ofremoval in terms
of number and size of northern pike removed over time. Total out year cost: $73,000.

98b. NNNO I 03: Translocation of Northern Pike from the Upper Yampa River (FWS,
$62,000) PLACEHOLDER

This project also is intended to improve survival of endangered fish in the Yampa and
Green rivers by removing pike from the upper Yampa River above Craig, Colorado
(-RM 135). This project is a "placeholder" as the Program's Management CommiUee
deferred a decision on whether to implement this project until after preliminary results of

C-IO
