000606

--------- APPENDIX C: FY-2002 - 2003 PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS ---------

- Lower portions of levees at the Grand Junction Pipe and Supply gravel pit on the
Colorado River and the Unaweep Charolais gravel pit on the Gunnison River to allow
entrainment of drifting larvae during spring runoff.

- Lower the Walter Walker SW A levee in three locations to help maintain habitat
diversity/complexity

- Seek agreements with federal, state, and local land management areas to enhance and
protect habitat.

- Pursue agreements and/or acquisition of easements on Tribal and private lands.

Total out year cost: FY 2003 cost estimated at $1,103,000.

Ill. REDUCE NONNATIVE AND SPORTFISH IMPACTS

87b. NNA/9802: Removal of Nonnative Fishes from Backwater Habitats in the Colorado
River in Colorado (CDOW, $17,300)

Completion of a study to remove small nonnative cyprinids and centrarchids from
backwaters in the 15- and 18- mile reaches of the Colorado River to benefit native fishes.
All backwaters within each study reach were sampled once a week for 3-4 weeks
preceding and up to spring runoff in June (this period precedes Colorado pikeminnow
spawning). Draft report due to coordinator March 30, 2002. Work may be continued if
preliminary results suggest that efforts to date have measurable decreases in nonnative
fishes and corresponding increases in native and endangered fishes. Total out year
cost: $0

89, NNA/9802: Colorado River Centrarchid Removal (FWS, $52,000)

Completion of a study to increase survival of age-O Colorado pikeminnow and other
native fishes by reducing piscivorous, nonnative centrarchids in riverine backwaters
where they are suspected of preying on juvenile, native fishes. All backwaters from the
Grand Valley Diversion Dam downstream to the top of Westwater Canyon were
electro fished twice prior to runoff and twice following runoff for three years. Draft report
due to coordinator May 1,2002. Work may be continued if preliminary results suggest
that efforts to date have measurable decreases in nonnative fishes and corresponding
increases in native and endangered fishes. Total oUlyear cost: $0.

C-18/19 NNA/9604: Reclamation of Ponds in the Floodplain along the Upper Colorado
and Gunnison rivers. (CDOW, $292,000)

The goal of this project is to reduce the potential for predation and competition on
endangered fish through chronic escapement of centrarchid sportfish from floodplain

C-8
