~
C"l
N
-

c: '>

SYNOPSIS

The La Plata Project involves 29,000 acres of land in

Colorado and New Mexico, which have been irrigated at some

time.

Farming operations carried on since lS75 have demon-

strated that soil and climate are satisfactory.

Water supply is inadequate for the area under ditches.

Shortages have been particularly severe since 1928, and in

conjunction with low prices for farm products have resulted

in a decrease in farmed area and livestock, and abandon-

ment of many farms. At one time over half the population

of the project was receiving relief of some kind.

Supplemental water must be provided if the present

irrigated area is to be successfully farmed and the farm

population retained. Such supplemental water supply must

be provided by storage of waters of the La Plata Basin as

importation from adjacent basins is too costly for feasibility

under existing laws.

The unregulated flow of the La Plata River is divided

between Colorado and New Mexico under the terms of the La

Plata Compact.
