San Francisco, California 94102 FOREWORD This report contains the papers presented at the Phreatophyte Symposium held at Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 30, 1966. The Symposium was sponsored by the Pacific Southwest Inter-Agency Committee, and produced by the Phreatophyte Subcommittee of PSIAC. The Su bcommittee is compos ed of employees of Federal and State agencies dealing with the problems of phreatophytes in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. It was established in January, 1951 by the Pacific Southwest Inter-Agency Technical Com- mittee, predecessor to PSIAC. This is the fourth symposium to be presented by the Subcommittee. The first two s}TTIlposiums were sponsored by the American Geophysical Union at Washington, D. C. in May, 1951, and at Sacramento, California in February 1957. The third symposium was presented at the November, 1961 meeting of PSIAC at Las Vegas, Nevada. The papers presented at the first three symposiums are listed in an appendix to this report. The members of the Subcommittee have also written many papers for government publications and technical and pro- fessional journals. They have participated in four international scientific meetings on this subject in Mexico, Canada, Germany and Italy. One of the interesting projects of the Subcommittee is an historical photo library that illustrates the spread of phreatophytes in the western United States. This is maintained by the U. S.
