.

74

0'1
. c 86
. {A,ridge was destroyed in 1925, but in 1904 all bridges except the
Animas Street bridge were either lost or isolated. The Commercial
Stre,,,t bridge was re buU t in 1905 at a cost of $83,000. It is

understood that looal subscriptions from railroads and individuals,
together idth funds allocated by the city for reconstruction of the

charmel in 1906, amounted to $175,000. Railroad bridges were re-
pluced at an estimated cost of $80,000 each. It is believed that

with preiJent channel conditions, ull bridges would be destroyed

or damaged beyond repair with a repetition of the 1904 flood and

the investment in the channel would be entirely lost, requiring

a much greater expenditure for repair to its present capacity,

an improvement which has beon recently estimated by local officials

.

to cost about $400,000. Individual losses would be essentially

the samo for floods similar to those for 190/+ and 1925. However,

a small increase in flood peak over that of 1904 would have re-

sulted in far greater damage than previously reported. Total

estimated flood damages for floodfJ vlith peaks equal to those of

1904 and 1925 are $700,000 and $/,1,,000 respf.1ctively.

Land and improvements within the area of the 1,000-year
probable flood have a value of $1,500,000, including residential,

business, und utilitios, but exclusive of railroads. Land values

are about $600,000 for this area according to County Assessor's

records. With the occurrence of such a flood or those approach--

ing that magnitude, the possible damage would be very much greater

than indicatud by lund and improvement values. ~'or the Pueblo
