b7

tt O~1852

.

Mr. J. Cox, Commissioner of Streets for Trinidad , states

that practicall~ no damage has been done at any time since 1904 to

city streets except through ologging of sewers and dirt deposited

on the streets. At the time of the 1904 flood, there were seven

bridges across the river in Trinidad proper. ~'hey were the Main

street, Animas Street, D. & R. G. W.,Commercial Street, Chesnut

Street, C. & S., and Linden Street bridges, located in that

order downstream. Bott railroad bridges were washed away, to-'

get her with the Commercial Street bridge, which carried an electrio

line in addition to road and foot paths. The Main Street and

Linden Street bridges were damaged to some extent and both were

left high and dry by shifts in the channel. The Anliuas Street

bridge was not seriously impaired, except for parts of one abut~
ment which was washed away. It was put in usable oondition after
the flood and was the only means of communication across town. No

reference has been found as to the condition of the Ct8stnut Street

bridge, but it was probably damaged to some extent at least,

since U.S.G.S. records show that none of the bridges were service-

able after the flood had receded. The cost of the Commercial

Street bridge was $15,000 when oonstructed. In R. I. Meeker's

report of this flood, his estimate of repairs to the channel is

$2.5,000.with an amount of $50,000 for new bridges and repairs. He

also includes $2.5,000 for general damage to public property.

The total for the city of Trinidad is $lOO,OOO for the 1904

.

.

~
