O~,1844
.

.

A 5-foot diameter detention conduit is placed through
t.he spillway crest o1t elevation 6160. This conduit, as well as
the spillway orest proper, hD.s no gates, so tht\t the discharge is
uncontrolled, swept by the physical dimensions of the pG.ssageways
themselves. Dischtlrge past the dam is controlled by the detention
outlet to a maximum of 700 second-feet with the vlnter surface in the
reservoir a.t elevc1tion 6205, at which point the detention storage is
5,270 acre-feet.
The spilll/a.y crest disch~rges a flood rise a.t a. compara-
tively. rapid rate until the tunnel intake becomes submerged, vlith the
outflow tl1rottled at higher water levels.
Tl1e relocated highway is placed through a cut in the left
abutment at elevation 6267.5. This provides an emergency spillway
outlet should the predicted rna.ximum flood be exceeded.
fulilroad Conduit
A branch line of the C.&W. railroad runs through the dam
site. It is carried through the dam in " r.lodified horseshoe con-
crete conduit which is placed on rock foundation at the right abut-
ment. Cutoff collars are provided around the conduit at 40-foot
centers on thc section up,11tream from the dCl!;1 Clxis. The roc_dbed up-
streClm from the conduit is protected for a distance of about l500
feet by a dike UlO!lg the river side to elevation 6216. A reservoir
vmtel' surfClce above elevfltion 6215 floods the railroad line temporarily
and an auto"~tically operated bulkhead gate is provided at the entrance
to prevent flow through the conduit. This gate is operated by an

.

60
