. 0 ~.181 7 by early direct flow rights. An increased production of

dry beans, a cash 0rop with 10111 water requirements, wiLL no doubt

follow upon enhanced water supply. For the years 192.5-l938 the

gross return per €lOre, for this crop, has averaged $28, second only

to sugar beets with an average gross return of $.52 per acre for the

same period..

There is no room for expansion of the irrigated area

with the plan under consideration, nor is it believed there could

be any if stream flow were regulated at Trinidad even more than

contemplated since winter flows are already stored by the Model

project and a general shortage exists on most lands throughout the

area. Escaping flood flows are too erratic to permit, economically

storing sufficient thereof to o~ercome existing shortages.
By inspection of the irrigated area shewn on drawing
256-D-109, it can be readily seen that a better concentration of
holdings near the source of supply would be desirable. Lands under
the Model system should be concontrated nearer the reservoir to

reduce transportation losses on water. Transportation f~cilities are

excellent throughout the area and no inconvenience should be experi-

enced from this angle. In the event the project, as outlined herein,

should proceed to construction, a general consolidation of irrigated

areas should be effected for greatest benefit.
Enhanoed Land Values and Taxes.

.

There have previously been shown the estimated irrigated

lcnd values in the vicinity of Trinidad both for present water supply

and full water supply with flood protection. For the Johns, Hoehne,

.

39
