. OC18C8

ECONOMIC DATA

Las Animas County

With a 1930 population of 36,000 this county ranked

fifth for the State of Colorado in that year, which position

has been held since the year 1900. It is the largest county of

Colorado, with an area of about 4800 square mUes. The follow-

ing data, taken from the Colorado Year Book, present its position

with referenoe to other counties in the state for the years shown:

:Coal:Y~nu- :Miles : Miles
Beef :Min-:fac- : of of
:cattle:ing :turing:railroad:highway

:Pop-: As-: :Agri-:
Year:Area:ula-;sessed: Bank :cul-
:tion: val. :deposits:ture

192.5: 1 .5 7 .5 36 3 1 l2 : 3 1
. 1930: 1 .5 7 .5 34 1 - . 12*: 2 2
193.5: 1 5 7 7 41 1 2 8**: 2 2
* 1919
*'" 1933
The assessed valuation in 1937 wc\s $28,600,000, compared
to $42,000,000 in 1930, $43,000,000 in 1925, and $42,000,000 in
1920. Although it is understood from the Las Animas County

assessor's office that only 2.5 percent of the 1937 farm taxes in this

area have been paid todate (1939), the tax collections on farms

for the entire county for the period 1932 to 1936 was 7.5 percent.

The present delinquency, it is understood, is not due to inability to

pay but rather for personal reasons on the part of farmers.
