.

O~1798

.

Nine Mile System

This projeot, irrigating about 2,000 acres of land, is

located about 75 miles below Trinidad near Higbee, Colorado, in

Otero County. The diversion canal of lOO second-feet capacity

has a deoreed right of 18 second-feet with a priority date of May

lO, l887. Since there are no. storage facilities, the projeot water

supply oonsists largely of flood flow and return flow from irrigated

lands above. These are generally greater in amount annually than the

total disCharge at Trinidad. Direct flow rights in the vicinity of

Trinidad of 335 second-feet are senior to the Nine Mile decree and

are sufficient to utilize all normal stream flow passing Trinidad.

Sizer (Highland) Canal System

This project, with its canal intake about 15 miles below

the Nine Mile canal heading, consists of an irrigated area averaging

about 2200 acres annually on the west side of the Purgatoire River

just south of the Arkansas Valley proper. As in the case of the

Nine Mile project, the irrigation supply is obtained from flood and

return flows. Here again, stream flow records show a larger annual

discharge than at Trinidad. Upstream decrees of 93 second-feet

antedate the first right of l6.6 second-feet. About 23.5 second-

feet are prior to the second right of 7.4 second-feet and a total

of 1176 second-feet, including the Nine Mile, is decreed ahead
of their right of 38..5 second-feet.

.

20
