Table 2 shows irrigation data in this
area as taken from the reoords of the Water Commissioner of Distriot

19. The 14 ditohes listed have a total oapacity of about 1200 seoond-

feet, 700 seoond-feet being that of the Model Canal. Other small

ditohes divert water from the Purgatoire and its tributaries above

the area under oonsideration while the Nine Mile and Sizer (Highland)

oanals are the only diversions between the project and. the river's

mouth, near Las Animas, Colorado.

There is no ohannel storage in the area. The Model Reser-

voir, now having a capacity of 15,000 acre-feet, is the only large

offstream storage. Ditoh headings are generally of fair oonstruo-

tion, with concrete or log orib diversion dams. Recurring floods

damage them every year and some are repeatedly being washed out.

Present Utilization of Lands

Sinoe praotically all of the irrigated lands in Las Animas

County are looated along the Purgatoire River, mainly in the vicinity

of Trinidad, the data used in this disoussion are for tha entire

oounty.

.

The prinoipal orops are alfalfa, beans, oorn, wheat, oats,

barley, and sugar beets.
