.

OC1782

Considerable flood damage has been experienced throughout

the valley and in the city of Trinidad. At present considerable

interest is shown in a project to prevent such losses as far as is

feasible.

.

Estimates are submitted for a plan of development to

provide irrigation regulation with flood control and relocation of

railroads, highways, and other improvements within the reservoir site.

Investigation of this project was sponsored by State and

local interests and recommended to the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation

by the Colorado State Planning Board as a project to be included in

the Eastern Slope Surveys, Colorado. Funds for the investigation

are available to the Bureau as a P.W.A.. allotment ~nder the Emergency

Relief Act of 1935.

Scope of Investigations

Field work began- on January 4, 1937, and consisted of

topographic surveys of the reservoir and dam site, a preliminary

geologic examination of the reservoir area, and diamond drilling

of the dam site. A determination was made of channel carrying

capacity in Trinidad as well as in the reach between Trinidad

and the dam. Flood probability and water supply studies Were mau~

in the Denver office. Economic data for irrigation and flood

damages were obtained in the field.

.

4
