G

0:1776

.

Coal mining and coking operations in the valley above Sopris

make it imperative that railroad and highway facilities be unim-

paired. To accomplish this all railroads in the reservoir area

are raised to elevation 6215, or two feet above the impounding

level of the 1925 flood, the greatest since 1904, over a period of

34 years. The C. & W. railroad will pass through the dam at eleva-

tion 6205 in a concrete conduit on solid rock foundation which il3

supplied with an upstream closure gate closing automatically when

the reservoir level reaches elevation 6215. Adequate block sig-

.

nals upstream and do~mstream from the reservoir are provided for

in the cost estimate to prevent trains from entering the reservoir

at that stage.

The highway, Colorado State No. 12, passes through a deep cut

(100 feet) at the north dam abutment at elevation 6267.5. This

cut serves as an emergelmy spillway in the event the estimated

maximum flood is exceeded. In the reservoir, provision is made

to relocate this highway to elevation 6225.

Improvements of the American Smelting and Refining Company,

at Cokedale, Colorado, are above the anticipated water level of

6267.5 for the 1,OOO-year flood. The remoteness of the maximum

flood precludes serious consideration of the minor damages which

woule! result therefrom.

.

Other improvements to be relocated are power lines, tele-
graph and telephone lines, ane! a pumping plant supplying ,mter to
Cokedale. Water supply pipe lines serving the city of Trinidad are

relocated through the dam; however, replacement of old wood stave

pipe lines in the reservoir is not anticipated.
