3071

.

irrigation water for lands already irrigated; no new lands
will be irrigated with Project water. Since Project waters
diverted from the western slope are of much better quality
than the present supply, some improvement should be expected
during the summer irrigation season although it may not be
very significant.

If the winter water storage program is implemented as planned,
the residual flows originating below Pueblo Dam will have a
higher concentration of dissolved solids than historic flows
due to reducing the flow of better quality water at Pueblo
Dam. The residual flows will be diverted mainly to off
channel storage reservoirs owned by the various ditch companies.
The water stored in these off channel reservoirs will be
applied to the land the following summer along with native
water, Project water, winter water stored in Pueblo Reservoir,
and water imported by other private projects. By mixing the
water from the various sources, the overall quality should be
improved due to the imported water. Because of the lack of
detailed studies on the impact of the imported water, the quanti-
ty of change on water quality is unknown.

.

II. Pueblo Reservoir is strategically located six miles from the
City of Pueblo and adjacent to Pueblo West, and is in close
proximity to several metropolitan areas totaling over 2110,000
people. Because of the scarcity of large fresh water recrea-
tion lakes in southeastern Colorado and with the development
of adequate recreation facilities, 980,000 initial visitor
days of use are forecast for the reservoir. Pueblo Reservoir
will be a major storage reservoir in southeastern Colorado
providing an opportunity for water-oriented recreation such
as boating, water skiing, and sport fishing. Panoramic views
and aesthetic beauty from overlooks of the reservoir area will
be significantly enhanced with the addition of a water body.
Recreation facilities will be provided to curtail environmental
abuse and neglect. A variety of facilities and measures are
planned for water quality protection, accommodating the anti-
cipated many area visitors, and enhancing the public social
well-being. They include paved access roads and parking areas,
underground utilities, architecturally treated operation and
recreation facilities and landscaping, a closed sewage treat-
ment system for on-land and water-based restrooms, camper and
boat sewage pumpout stations, and an irrigation system for
heavy use areas.

38

.

I
,-
